Your tribute to Dr. Lloyd-Jones is so good. I, too,
knew the Doctor and share the same indebtedness to him as you.
He can still be heard at:

I especially recommend "The Crowning Day." (It takes a while to download.)

Quite exquisit. The years I spent in FCH and Colomendy Camp School are numbered as some of my happiest, with fond memories of those that resided and worked there.

Do you by any chance remember during your brief stay at Olive Mount

an Auxilliary nurse by the name of Miss Elsie Roberts?

Elsie is my mum ( who sadly passed away recently). I have photographs taken in the spring and summer of 1949 which feature many of the children 'housed' (sorry about the choice of wording) there at Olive Mount..My mum worked in 'L' Cottage. Mum worked at O.M. from 1948 - 1960.

I found your site whilst searching for information on Fazakerley Sanatorium in Liverpool. I am doing some family tree research into my partners fathers side of the family.

I was really impressed with what you have written about your life so far and loved reading it.

My partners 'auntie' was born and died before her brother (my partners father)was born so he never met her and as she was never spoken about knows very little about her. I have found that she was born in 1915. Her mother was unmarried. She sadly died aged 14yrs in Fazakerley Sanatorium, Fazakerley, Liverpool from Pulmonary TB. Could this possibly be the same establishment as the one you lived in during your early years? If so do you know when it changed from being the home for the pauper children that it was originally built for to the TB sanatorium and when did its use change again into the orphanage? Do you know if the buildings are still standing and if so do you have any idea of there current use? I would be grateful for any information that you may have. Take care and thank you

God Bless

Ann

Hello Brian,

I found your site very interesting,I was in F.C.H.

for eight years, eight years of misery, from about 1935-1943.

I was in Miss Warringtons cottage for all of that time,I know

her well believe me ,we lived in fear of a beating, her favouite weapon was a long=handled broom, but she punched ,kicked,or beat the kids with anything she could lay her hands on. so she became assistant matron.and you are in favour of "corporal punishment"

When I saw her photo it made me feel a bit sick,in eight years she never called any of the kids by their first name, she hated us and we hated her. Best of Luck to you ....Ken

I was interested to read about your memories of your time in the Fazackerley Cottage Homes. The memories I have are happy ones.

My two brothers, sister, and I arrived in the Cottage Homes after a short spell in Olive Mount. Father abandoned us on the pavement there when Mother was taken into hospital with a terminal illness. I was in the Cottage Homes from early 1948 (?) until I left when I was 15 yrs old in December 1952. My brother, Alan, and I both lived in cottage No. 17. The house Mother was a Mrs Oldfield.

The boys were separated from the girls. My sister, Lily, lived in a cottage, (no.?) on the right of the Avenue, and the only opportunity I had of seeing her was looking over the heads of the other children in Church on Sundays.

My best friends were Ben Langley, and Dougie Milligan. There was also a coloured boy called Bocky Owens. I do remember Mr. Greatrex and his Welsh sheepdog called Dina. I agree he was a wonderful chap. It was a great privilege to be invited into his flat to sit around and chat and made to feel at home as we got older. I do remember Wally. I believe he met Max Bygraves when they were both serving in the RAF together and I also remember Max Bygraves coming to the Home. I also remember a group of us waiting at the gates for the Doctor to arrive when we would all pile into his car, and being driven down to the Sick Bay. It must have been my first experience of being in a private car.

It was great fun going to the Isle of Man for our holiday, although I also remember being terribly sea-sick on one occasion. We also went to Cholomendy, in North Wales. Did you go there?

Do you have any information about Fazackerly Cottage Homes Old Boy’s Reunions? I would like to meet up with some of the old boys and reminisce about old times together. I remember there was one every year when the old boys and girls used to turn up, some in military uniform, and dance in the church hall.

Sydney Bell.

Thank you so much for the trouble you have taken to produce your website. I was a resident of Fazackerley from about 1943 to 1949. It served as a great reminder to me how influential my stay there has been.

Thanks again, it was a delight to visit the site

Hello,

Came across your bit on Fazakerley Cottage Homes through a google search. Fascinating page. I didn't realise they had had a reunion this year. Have you come across our website, www.careleaversreunited.com? There is an entry on the site for the Cottage Homes. You might find some people on there who know more about the place. Also, if you would like to upload a photograph of the home and perhaps send us your page on Fazakerley Cottage Homes as a link, we would be happy to add it to the site. Alternatively, you could just register yourself for that home and include the link to your page in your personal comments.

Best wishes,

Jim Goddard (Secretary, Care Leavers Association)

Hi Brian,

In my continuing pro-active pro-human and thus pro-Christian investigation of The Salvation Army I read much mail and else trying to develope an informed opinion pertinent to where I live*.

Your use of the term "Joe public" in this context seems depreciating of Real-Christianity and The Salvation Army?

I must congratulate you on a well put together story. Ialso was a resident of Fazakerley Cottage Homes, a little earlier than you. Ispent all of my chidhood in the Homes, from 1930 to 1943, mostly in cottage number 7 , my 5 older sisters were also there , some in number 10 and two younger girls in number 8. The place must have changed dramaticaly after i left, since you seemed to have had a much more enjoyable time of it. The name that comes to mind when i look back is Dickens. I was hungry Skinny.and worked like a horse, although the horses that took away our garbage and delivered the coal, always seemed to have this bag of oats around its neck. No rest for the wicked, isnt that what they say.But to you well done and good luck.

this site has been very interesting, especially as my friend was one of the cottage home children born in 1945 she was placed in care at the age of three. she has related tales of the cottage homes to me and remembers well the trips to the isle of man. She managed to find her mother eventually but being of mixed race herself has had no leads as to who her father was. she is desperately trying to find her brother and sister who also ended up in care they all share the same mother but had different fathers.

Hello Brian,

I came upon your website quite by accident. I had searched upon my dads name, first off as Edward then Ted Eves. I came upon a reference that mentioned a humerous chap called Ted Eves in 1966.

Although i found your first name easily enough it took a little finding to locate your full name, that is when the penny dropped.

You being the Brian i knew all those years ago.

My mom and dad now live in Mold, North Wales, I live in Wakefield West Yorkshire, My younger brother, Keith, lives near my mom and dad. I'm not sure if my sister Gillian was born when you visited us but she works as a Soco for the police in London. I work as a signal engineer for Networkrail.

The sad news is my older brother, David, passed away Christmas Eve morning 2004.

As for your comment about taking a mature friend to the Sheil Park Hotel in 1966. Are you sure it was me dad, He's still not grown up yet and when he has I may consider growing up as well.

Best Wishes,

Brian.
