Brian, read about your website in the Salvationist having lost track of you after you were, I think, CO at Filey (My wife Diane had been there 1966-7)

Do you recall Henry Collings who was also at Fazakerly?

I linked up with the Army through Aintree Youth Centre, Longmoor Lane, in 1953 and started attending Walton in 1955, entering Training in 1963. We spent 37 years on social but now approaching retirement run a small corps in East Anglia, a tent-making ministry supported by working one day per week for the NHS

My Mother, aged 91 lives nearby and still remembers you.

Would be interested to hear from you.

Hiya brian,

You will not remember me, I am sure, but i was in the ITC at the same time as you, I, and my now wife (was Brenda Bateman) were Messengers of the Faith. I found your site fascinating. It is interesting how different the route is from the ITC for different people. Although my wife and two sons are all salvationists (my Youngest Jonathan is an officer at the St Helen's hostel and soldiers at Prescott Corps!)I am a Quaker in the beautiful city of Lincoln. Good to hear of how things are going for you.

Cheers

Brian

I met you yesterday at the 2003 reunion at Fazakerley and I must say I was apprehensive returning to FCH after all these years. It was a visit full of mixed emotions - but I was glad I did it.Could you send me your email address as I will let you know how I go on with my own investigations...next year I hope to be able to pin point the two important dates and the Number of the Cottage I stayed in for a while.

Best Regards

Enjoyd your site. We have a little in common. I enjoy Studdart Kenedy poems although I agree with you his theology is questionable. I enterd the William Booth Memorial College Toronto in 1965 and was commissioned in 1967. Served for 23 years when my marriage broke up I was turfed. How Christ like!

Found you site while searching for the Kennedy poem.

Cheers!

Intended to leave you with this Kennedy poem the other day when I visited your site. A favorite of mine.

Indifference

When Jesus came to Golgotha, they hanged him on a tree...

They drove great nails through hands and feet, and made a Calvary.

They crowned him with a crown of thorns, red were his wounds and deep,

For those were crude and cruel days... and human flesh was cheap.

When Jesus came to Birmingham, they simply passed him by.

They never hurt a hair of Him... they only let him die.

For people had grown more tender, and they would not give him pain.

They only just passed down the street and left Him in the rain.

Still Jesus cried, “Forgive them, for they know not what they do,”

And still it rained the wintry rain that drenched Him through and through;

The crowds went home and left the streets without a soul to see,

And Jesus crouched against a wall and cried for Calvary.

Can I begin by saying my son mailed me the link to your site, he has lived in Germany for the last 16 years, he was serching for information on Fazakerley when he came across the site. Im at work at present just a few hundred yards from the river Mersey and right opposite the Anglican Cathedral, I work with the Security staff of LIPA. I have just spent over an hour of lovely reading, thank you, I live in Fazakerley 'Haven Road. just a few yards from New Hall (Cottage Homes) You actually brought back memories for me as I had been to one or two of the Christmas parties at the English Electric. Another memory you have brought back was of a very nice guy I new for about 12 years Wally Roe, wally used to give me plants from his garden so I could plant them in the grounds of the tower block Joe Morgan Heights, then in Haven Rd it's knocked down now. Can I say, I like your style haha' I too support LFC from the Shankley days to the present time, you should remember Jimmy Case I married his cousin Brenda Case.

Can I say again a nice site and an exellent read, thank you.

Dear Brian, thankyou so much for writing about your life in such detail and honesty. It has been an insight to see where my nan grew up from the about the age of 8. She was born 1912 so must have been at the cottages from around 1920. She lived in No.7. We love her so much! She is still alive but her memory is not what it used to be, and a law that was passed recently prevents us from finding any details of her stay there. You can now only access files of people who you can prove have since died. You sound a wonderful person, and it must be something to do with that home, because my nan is also the head of our family and the one we have always turned to for love and support. You have inspired to try and find out more about her as possible. Kind regards, Gillian Thompson, Formby, Liverpool.

Hi Brian,

I was vey pleased to find your site and data on Faz' Cottage Homes. I have searched for soom years for more data and last tried the web about 2 years ago to no effect.

My wife, then MARY CLOSE, was in the Home from 1944 approx. to 1947. Like you she had lots of unanswered questions, and wondered if there were any contemporary records or photo's and in particular wondered what became of here friend; EDITH LAWSON.

She remembers the name of the House Mother Miss Sampson and her Assistant Mrs Churchill.

We visited the home a few years ago and took photos but still need to know more! Is there another reunion planned??

Best Regards,

Rob

Hi Brian,

I have just managed to contact an old school mate via the internet after 40+ years. I sent him the photo of the footy team in the IOM that shows Brian Galagher who was in our class and I've worked out that the kid sitting on the ground on the extreme left is Roger Rice. Is the kid sitting between them Alloway Yaha who later had a name change to Alloway Derschen? He wrote back with a few other names. They were Peter Hargreaves, Tommy Harrison and Peter Lawson.I remember I used to play with Peter Lawson. Ever remember them.

Hello Brian

I came across your wonderful website accidently but I am so glad that I did for your story has certain similarites to my own search for my father.

He too was a black GI stationed in Huyton, Liverpool during WW2, though like yourself I too spent many years thinking that he was based at nearby Burtonwood. My mother was a local white girl from St Helens, Lancashire and they met at a dancehall.

I was born in 1944 and fortunately there was no question that my family would keep me although there were some considerable `ructions` in the household.

Growing up I was fobbed off with tales that my father had died in the war etc; and I knew nothing of him except at some stage I found a paper with his name on which I took and hid.

Although my family loved and tried to protect me I was desperately unhappy as a child for I was taunted frequently about the colour of my skin. I was the only person I knew who looked like me and I hated my black skin and developed a deep sense of rejection during my early life.

I began to search for my father myself sometime in my teens but with just a name and no state or other clues it proved impossible.

I married and had a family though and from time to time I would write a few letter and wrote to the US military but I got nowhere.

I had come to accept the inevitable that I would never learn anything about him and I had at last come to terms with my lot and put it firmly behind me. I had divorced by now but had two wonderful children and a lot to be thankful for and so I decided to be mature about it and leave things alone.

In 2002 my son taught me how to use a computer for the first time and one day we put in my fathers name. Just as an exercise you understand I wasn`t really paying much attention when Bang! my whole world seemed to explode inside my head. There it was on the screen on an official document the fantastic wonderful name that I had dreamt of for so many years. I had found my Daddy!

Then almost simultaneously I realised what it was I was looking at and saw that it was the United States Social Security Death Index.

That was about two years ago now and after the grief had subsided I decide that at least I was better off than before because now I had an address, a social security number and an army number. This time the NRCMP in Missouri would have to listen to me, so I began writing letters.

Eventually I made contact with a niece of my fathers in Arkansas where he had originally lived and through her I now have some information about him and his life. Most wonderfull of all I have a photograph, just the one but it is so beautiful and has made so much difference to me that every time I look at it I smile. I couldn`t believe my luck when I got the photograph for I am a female version of my Daddy.

I have gone a bit sorry...I have so much more I would like to ask you in time, would that be possible?

You are an inspirational man and I feel privileged to have had a chance to read your story that it quite puts me to shame for feeling so negative about my early life.

Best wishes

Monica

x

A great site! thanks. you have given information that may help friens of mine locate their respective fathers.

While i do not agree with your religious beliefs and a woman's rights, it is your site and you are just as entitled, as am i, to those beliefs.

You were fortunate to have been in good homes and in good foster cae. some who were raised by their natural families had much, much less than you in regard to warmth and love. although the discipline was always there!! thanks again, brian.

An interesting site. A Calvinist, eh? I too was brought up in the nationalised Church of England, where I ministered as a (lay) preacher of the Gospel for many years. My studies and my personal devotional life with God have led me out of the church of England, but to a very different position from yours.

I am a Universalist. God reveals , and not just to a narrowly chosen few. (No offence intended.) We all seek the same truth, although we may package it differently.

Peace and blessings on you and your work for the Lord.

Dr Peter Edwards, Bishop of North Yorkshire.
