My name is Joe Connelly and my wife you know as Cathy Connelly. She too grew
up in Fazakerley Cottage Homes in the 40's and 50's with her brother and sister.
I visited the Homes in Apr 98 and was impressed at the uniqueness of how the
children were raised at that time was well ahead of anything tried in that
atmosphere. I believe that the children raised in Fazakerley Homes were better
off in many ways than children raised in the traditional way. Thanks for your
website. Joe

Very well done - your experience is a reflection of my own search. However,
it disheartens me to read your disdain of the Roman Catholic Church. I plead
ignorance to the teachings of the church in England, but am very well versed in
the American church. I might add that I am a born again Christian and find no
conflict with my salvation and the salvation doctrine of the Catholic Church,
which is: "salvation is a GIFT from our Lord, Jesus Christ." Please
rethink your unkind comments about my beloved church. Isn't there enough
separating us without Christians fighting amongst themselves?

Your website was sent by Cathie, who also spent time at Fazakerley Cottage
Homes ... my mother was abandoned by her mother in about 1904 or so, and she was
raised there, later going into "service" until she met and married my
father in 1925 ... isn't this a small, small, world? I did enjoy your site, and
remember, whatever her reasons, from your comments you are a son any parent
would take pride in ... it is a shame you never got to know your father ... you
have done very well on your own.... R. Prince from Arkansas

Thank you for sharing this: it makes me aware that I have had a rather
privileged upbringing.
What a wealth of information and teaching there is here! J C Ryle's
exposition on Acts 4:12 could be preached today; it is so very contemporary,
despite being written in 1877. Judging by the comments in her exercise book, my
daughter's liberal RE teacher could learn a lot from it!

Thank you for sharing your life with people, I am particularly interested as
I too was a war baby, born in Liverpool that could have been aborted, and I
thank God that my birth mother never went through with anything of that nature.
I have never been as fortunate as yourself to find out so much about my father
(or extended family), whom I believe to be a GI stationed at Burtonwood, but as
I do not even know his name it would be impossible for me to obtain any
information regarding him. I am approaching 58 years of age now, and have been
married for 35 years to a wonderful man, and count my blessings I have two
lovely children one daughter in law and one grandchild expected in Feb/March
2001. I have not read all of your story yet, but look forward to doing so, and I
am so pleased that you have found the time to share it with the world.....

Hello Brian, Cathy from Liverpool sent your website to the Scousers list.
Well I couldn't believe my eyes. When I downloaded your Photos from the Mission.
on Hill and Hyslop streets, Oh what memories came flooding back to me . I
remember Mr. Daniels, (I never knew his surname) WE children from that area
where all very fond of him as he was always so kind to us .We were all very poor.
at that time 1939 to 1945. when I went to St. Patrick's school which was just
around the corner from the mission. WE often stopped to play with the little
children and would ask if we could take them for a walk. I never realized they
where Orphans, we thought they belonged to the woman who lived at the mission. I
remember those two women in your photos there as also another girl, I thought
she would be a sister of the younger one in the photos. and thought the older
woman was their Mother . I think they came from outside of Liverpool as I recall
they sounded different. You really have me going ..but I must stop and send your
link to another old friend who will remember what you are talking about . She
also had a white mother and her father was a West Indian We just reunited at a
Burtonwood reunion six years ago . We lost touch 40 years . ran around with
different groups. Our Mothers also went to St. Pats. so we do go way Back It is
just wonderful to read about your search. and so happy for you . Regards Eileen
Sayer ,Florida.

All very interesting. You have both obviously worked hard in the compilation
but, if I may say so, it will have been a 'labour of love' insofar that it will
have particularly helped you, Brian, to 'find yourself', your identity, and
which you say was/is important to pass on to your family and so that they, like
others, normally know their own history and background. Your wife (sorry, I've
only just read it but forgot already. Is it Gail?) will also, I feel, have
derived much in helping, you, her husband, for whom she cares, and the common
goal between you of giving your children their history. What you have done makes
me feel very much like trying to emulate, but maybe mine will be via the book I
am writing and which I have made a resolve to work on towards completion this
year.

Hello. I wrote you a note on crossdaily. I had read most of your site before
I wrote but came back here again today. As I said in the other, I believe God
has had his hand in my contacting you. I am searching for a stepbrother left
overseas. My dad did not tell us till he was dying and told us nothing else. He
was stationed at Aldershot in WWll and met a love. We think her name was Emma,
but not sure. It's like searching for a needle in a hay stack. I think God must
have wanted me to know that their are war babies survivors out there and to keep
looking. Which I am doing. Hope you contact me back Brian, and may God Bless you
and your family. My email address is <marshah@mb.sympatico.ca>.

My family lived in the Old Roan not far from
Maghull. I
remember seeing the black American troops on the train when I returned from
overseas in 1943. I resented the fact that the girls went out with them but it
was more a resentment that Americans should boast that they were there to show
us how to win the war although we had been fighting alone for 2½ years.
Maturity has made me realise that the individual was not to blame but the
political situation. I can understand your mothers problem as unmarried mothers
were not accepted in those times. You were at least born in a city that cares
for people.

Hi My name is Fred and I live in RUNCORN UK about 12 miles SE
of Liverpool. I was also a resident of the Cottage Homes at FAZAKERLEY and
reading your story brought back a few memories both of my time at OLIVE MOUNT
HOSPITAL, FAZAKERLEY and AMESTRY COURT SCHOOL. Memories of THE HOMES are very
vague but I do remember Mr Ken Graterex and the name of my house-mother, a Mrs
ASHCROFT. I lived in cottage No 20 (I think) and remember the shows in the hall
of the Church. My uncle Ronnie was one of the organizers of the Christmas festivities for a number of years but, sadly passed away after emigrating to
Australia in the 1960s.
Thanks for your time and the memories. I only wish I could
remember more of my past.
